Taipei, Deggendorf, 4. Juni 2007 – Durch die Aufnahme eines weiteren wichtigen Embedded Computer Herstellers nimmt die COM Express™ PnP Initiative weiter Fahrt auf. Die Mitgliedschaft von AAEON Technology Inc. unterstützt die COM Express™ PnP Initiative um eine einheitliche Implementierungsstategie für COM Express™ Module und Basisboards zu erreichen. Mit dem kostenlosen Design Guide der Initiative können Entwickler von COM Express Lösungen eine einfache Austauschbarkeit von Modulen und Carrier Boards erzielen und das Risiko technisch bedingter Inkompatiblitäten zwischen verschiedenen Herstellern verhindern. COM Express ist ein klar definierter Standard für Computer-On-Modules (COM) der PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG). Dieser Standard erlaubt eine hohe Flexibilität für vielfältige Embedded Computing Anwendungen. Die Definition spezifiziert zwei Modulgrößen und fünf unterschiedliche Pinout Typen.
Der PICMG Standard erlaubt gewisse Freiheiten bei der Implementierung von COM Express Lösungen in Bezug auf Power-Sequencing, I/O Definitionen, etc. Gerade diese Auswahlmöglichkeiten bringen häufig Einschränkungen bei der Austauschbarkeit zwischen verschiedenen Herstellern mit sich. Ohne der Anwendung der PnP Implementierungs-Richtlinie besteht das Risiko von Fehlfunktionen bei der Verwendung von Carrier Boards oder COM Express Modulen anderer Hersteller.
Die von der congatec AG initiierte COM Express PnP Implementierung ist als Design Guide verfügbar. Dieser beschreibt alle möglichen COM Express Interfaces im Detail und gibt damit den Systemintegratoren die Möglichkeit zur Entwicklung vollständig austauschbarer Lösungen. Die kompletten Schaltpläne eines umfassend ausgestatteten Carrier-Boards sind ebenfalls Teil des Design Guide Pakets. Des weiteren wird die COM Express PnP Initiative gemeinsam mit dem neuen Mitglied AAEON ein COM Express Plugfest etablieren. Mit dem Plugfest können Hersteller die Austauschbarkeit ihrer Produkte testen und demonstrieren. Jedes Mitglied kann seine eigenen Produkte nach einem standardisierten Testverfahren überprüfen. Die Ergebnisse werden getrennt nach Hersteller und Produkt auf der Webseite veröffentlicht. Als nächstes wird die COM Express PnP Initiative Integrationsvorschläge für Software-Features, I/O Controller Support, LVDS Display Support sowie weiterer Embedded Features veröffentlichen. AAEON ist der COM Express PnP Initiative beigetreten um bei der Realisierung dieser Ziele aktiv mitzuwirken.

About COM Express™
COM Express™ modules are highly integrated off-the-shelf building blocks based on a PCI Express bus architecture that plugs into custom made, application-specific carrier boards. COM Express™ basic modules measure just 95 mm x 125 mm and include generic functions such as video, audio, Ethernet, storage interfaces and USB ports that are needed for most applications. A custom designed carrier board complements the COM Express™ core module with the additional functionality required for specific applications. COM Express™, a PICMG specification, is a result of the convergence of the latest technology standards based on serial differential signaling such as PCI Express, USB 2.0, Serial ATA, LVDS and Serial DVO implemented on an extremely compact Computer on Module. Moving from parallel buses such as PCI and IDE to serial buses such as PCI Express and SATA is a change on a scale of which has not been seen since PCI replaced ISA.
