Erbach, Deggendorf September 23, 2005 - customer demand for small, high performing computer modules is strongly increasing. For this reason Bosch Rexroth AG, congatec AG and two additional embedded computer manufacturers decided to create the miniaturized "COMPACT" computer module based on the COM Express connector and signal definition.
What's small? The PICMG (PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group) defines anything below 170x170mm² to be small. The PICMG COM Express specification defines two module sizes; extended (155x110mm²) and the basic (125x95mm²). Many users of embedded computer modules don't have the space needed to utilize either of these two versions and still require something smaller.
The "COMPACT" version, based on the COM Express Typ 2, measures only 95x95mm². Pins and mechanics are 100% compatible with the PICMG COM Express specification. The board itself is one third shorter and therefore can be much more easily integrated into systems. Bosch Rexroth AG and congatec AG are both striving for "COMPACT" to be adopted as an additional PICMG COM Express definition.
The "COMPACT" will offer a maximum of 22 PCI Express Lanes, Serial ATA, USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. The parallel PCI Bus will still be maintained thereby allowing a smooth upgrade to todays fastest serial buses.
This new concept will permit easy integration while providing the latest I/O interface technologies and will also enable large headroom for future applications.

The first COMPACT modules based on COM Express will be available December 2005.
